The duck snack for today was an old head of butter lettuce that has started to bolt. As the spring turns to summer we like to feed our welsh harlequin ducks snacks from the garden that we are not going to eat ourselves. Instead of just composting this bolting plant, we can feed it to the duck girls and let them have a little change of pace for their feed. The bottom set of these leaves often have a bug or two nestled inside the leaves making butter lettuce a great duck snack with the potential for a surprise slug or two the duck’s favorite treat.

Ducks and chickens love getting fed extra snacks. Mix it up on your urban homestead by giving them different options. Remember to not give them too many snacks though. Rather than fill up on snacks alone it is important for them to get proper nutrition, especially ducklings.
